What can TACENZA see?
What TACENZA's server stores about your Chat account and what it never has – messages, contacts, IP addresses – plus the opt-ins that reveal more.
No, TACENZA can’t read your messages. Everything you write in TACENZA Chat is encrypted on your device before it’s sent, and the server stores only ciphertext it can’t decrypt.
Some things the server does need to know to work. Here’s the short version; the full list is in the privacy policy.
What the server never has
- Your messages, files, photos or voice messages in readable form.
- Your password, private keys or recovery key.
- Your username in plain text – it stores a hash.
- Your contacts, the people you block, group names, bios and profile pictures.
- IP addresses, device details, cookies or analytics.
- Who wrote a given text message.
What the server does know
- Who is in which conversation, and their roles, so it can deliver messages and enforce group permissions.
- Encrypted, padded messages and files, until they’re deleted or their timer runs out.
- Your public keys.
- Your devices as random ids, and the day each was last used.
- The month you last logged in, not the day.
- Which account’s storage an attachment uses. This means the server knows who sent a message that has an attachment. Text messages are unaffected.
- Group settings such as permissions and slow mode, and whether you allow being added to groups – so it can enforce them.
- Billing details, if you pay: your plan and invoice amounts. Stripe holds your name, email and card; it never learns your username.
Opt-ins that reveal more
These are off until you turn them on, and each one says what it reveals where you switch it on:
- Push notifications go through your browser maker’s push service, which learns when you get a notice – never who wrote or what.
- Email notifications store your email address in plain text. It’s the only real-world detail we’d ever hold.
- Two-factor sign-in, sign-in history and online & last seen each store a little more, as described in Settings › Privacy Center and Settings › Security Center.
- Discover makes a group’s name, picture, description and join link public, by its admins’ choice.
- Fetched link previews let our server fetch links you send. It keeps nothing.
Honest limits
- The server can see who talks to whom in which conversations, even though it can’t see what’s said.
- Anyone can test whether a particular username exists.
- A web page can’t block screenshots. The desktop app can.
TACENZA Mail works differently from Chat. It can encrypt the mail it stores, but email itself isn’t end-to-end encrypted.
