I can't join a group

Join a TACENZA Chat group with an invite link or from Discover. Why joining can fail, why you can't see older messages, and what "waiting for keys" means.

The easiest way in is an invite link from someone in the group. In TACENZA Chat, choose New › Join with a link, paste the whole link, and choose Join. You can also paste the link into the search field at the top of your chat list.

Before you join, you see the group’s name and member count. Joining gives the group a new key, so you only see messages sent from now on – not the history from before you joined.

Find public groups

Open Discover to browse groups whose owners chose to list them. Search by name, topic or #tag, then choose Join. Your search stays on your device.

If joining doesn’t work

  1. “This invite link is invalid or has been revoked.” See My invite link doesn’t work.
  2. “Request sent. An admin needs to approve it.” The group’s admins approve new members. You’ll get in once one of them does.
  3. “You’re already in this group.” Look for it in your chat list, under Groups.
  4. “You’re banned from this group.” An admin has banned you. You can’t rejoin until they unban you.
  5. “You opened an invite link. Log in or create an account to join.” Log in first; the link is kept for you.
  6. “Too many attempts.” Joining with links is limited. Wait the time shown.

After you’ve joined

  • “You’ve joined. Messages open as soon as a member who’s online shares the group’s keys with you.” Group keys are handed out by members’ devices, not by TACENZA. Wait until someone in the group is online.
  • You can read but not post. Some groups ask new members to finish a welcome first: “Finish the group’s welcome steps first.” Others only let certain roles post in some channels.
  • Some older messages can’t be read. Messages from before you joined were encrypted with keys you were never given.

Being added directly

People can also add you to a group by your username, unless you’ve set Who can add me to groups to Nobody – only invite links in Settings › Privacy Center. Then they’ll see that you don’t allow being added, and need to send you a link.

Still stuck?

If you still can’t join, ask the group’s admins for a new link. If that doesn’t help, contact support.
