How do I leave or delete a group?
Leave a TACENZA Chat group, hand it over if you own it, or delete it for everyone. Also why a 1:1 chat can be deleted but not left.
Open the group, choose Manage group, and scroll to Leave or delete on the Overview page.
- Leave group – you stop receiving messages. The group gets new keys, so you can’t read anything sent after you leave. You can only come back if someone adds you again or sends you an invite link.
- Delete group – only the owner sees this. It deletes every message and file for everyone, and removes all invite links. It can’t be undone.
If you’re the owner
Leaving as the owner hands the group to an admin. If you’d rather choose who takes over, transfer ownership first:
- In Manage group, find Ownership.
- Pick the member under Transfer to and choose Transfer ownership.
- Confirm. The new owner can do everything you can, including deleting the group. You stay on as an admin.
To end the group for everyone instead, choose Delete group.
Deleting a group removes every message, file and invite link from the server for all members. Nobody can undo it, including us.
Common messages
- “A group can be left, not deleted.” Only the owner can delete a group. Everyone else can leave.
- “Only the owner can do that.” You’re an admin, but not the owner. Ask the owner, or leave.
- “A 1:1 chat can be deleted, not left.” A chat between two people has no “leave”. Open its info and choose Delete chat – that deletes it and its messages for both of you.
Just want some quiet?
You don’t have to leave. Under Just for you on the Overview page you can Mute the group for a while, set Notify me about to Mentions and replies only or Nothing, or Archive it to move it out of your chat list.
