How do I save my recovery key?
Your recovery key is the only way back into TACENZA Chat if you forget your password. How to save it, where to keep it, and how to make a new one.
Your recovery key is shown once, when you create your account. Choose Copy or Download, keep it somewhere private, tick I’ve saved my recovery key somewhere safe. and choose Continue.
If you skipped that, or you’re not sure where it went, make a new one now while you still know your password:
- Go to Settings › Account and find Recovery key.
- Choose Make a new recovery key and enter your current password.
- Save the key you’re shown.
The old key stops working at once. If you see “You haven’t confirmed saving a recovery key.” in Settings, or Save your recovery key on your Home page, this is how to fix it.
Where to keep it
- A password manager – next to your TACENZA password is fine, as long as the password manager itself is well protected.
- On paper, somewhere safe at home.
- The downloaded file, moved somewhere private – not left in a shared downloads folder.
A recovery key is 14 groups of 4 letters and digits. When you type it later, capitals, spaces and dashes don’t matter.
Anyone with your recovery key can set a new password and take over your account. Don’t send it to anyone, don’t post it, and don’t store it in a chat. TACENZA will never ask for it.
Why it matters
TACENZA never has your password, so we can’t reset it. With your recovery key, you can set a new password yourself – see I forgot my password. Without your password or your recovery key, nobody can open your account, including us.
When to make a new one
- You think someone else has seen it.
- You can’t find it.
- You used it to reset your password – that gives you a new key automatically, and the old one stops working.
